Which AXEO High-Performance kit do I need if I have or plan to go with a Fat Tire setup?
There are many different fat tire/front fender kits out there offered by various manufacturers and all of them may be a little different regarding rim size, fender options included in the kit, etc. This makes it difficult for us to recommend a specific AXEO product that will work with your particular fat tire kit.
The most important consideration when choosing the correct front suspension to be used with these kits is travel and clearance between the front fender and lower triple tree/fairing. By going to a fat front tire, the overall tire diameter will increase. This isn't too much of an issue when choosing front suspension until it starts to change fender location. If the front fender remains in the stock location, our Standard AXEO High-Performance kits (without travel limiting) should work just fine. However, if the diameter of the front wheel increases enough to require the front fender to be relocated further up the fork tube, this will result in less clearance between the fender and the lower triple tree/fairing, and there is now a risk of contacting the fender on the lower triple tree/fairing when the suspension is compressed far enough. In this situation, we recommend one of our travel-limited cartridges (AXEO 21 High-Performance or AXEO 23 High-Performance).
Most of the fat tires we see installed can be used with a stock front fender or aftermarket fender, with the fender remaining in the stock location. In these situations, the Standard AXEO High-Performance kit for your particular bike can be used. However, if the front fender has been relocated to accommodate the fat front tire, we won't recommend a particular AXEO, but instead instructions on how to do a "Front Suspension Mock Up" to determine travel clearance between the front fender in the new location and the lower fairing/triple tree.
If this applies to you, please check out our article discussing the steps on How To Do a Front Suspension "Dry Mockup".
NOTE:
- We do not recommend running a 1" lowered AXEO High-Performance with any fat tire kit.
- 2018-2022 Road Glide CVO models or any bike with a Knockout Front Wheel Kit will require the AXEO21 "KO" High-Performance kit due to the different length fork tubes on these models.
